An investigative jouney into the world of genetically modified crops in India. I was prepared to have an open mind but it all became clear that there was something to hide when myself and the Guardian journalist I was travelling with found ourselves being followed by Monsanto spooks.
In Warangal we found out why Monsanto were so touchy. The expensive hybrid seeds being used by farmers had failed.
Farmers had borrowed money, lured by an extensive adverstising campaign, to buy the seeds from seed dealer -money lenders. After the crop failure and with debts mounting to avoid shame many farmers took their own lives by drinking pesticide .
